State-Owned Russian Telecoms Firm Plans To Dispute Back Tax Claim

by Tatiana Smolenskaya, for LawAndTax-News.com, Moscow

10 February 2005

It emerged this week that state-owned Russian telecoms firm OAO Dalsvyaz is facing a RUB718 million back tax bill, which it intends to appeal.

This is the first time that a state-owned telecommunications company has faced such a demand in Russia, despite the government's recent pursuit of privately-held OAO Vimpel Communications for back taxes.

According to a Dow Jones Newswires report, Dalsvyaz stated that it was "surprised by the actual decision and the sum of the claims", and revealed that its tax payment record has been exemplary since the company was established.
