Stansted Airport Expansion Argument Reaches High Court

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

26 February 2009

Protests against the plan have been mounted by the Stop Stansted Expansion group, who are worried about the detrimental effects which expanding the airport may have upon the environment.

The expansion plan envisages building an extra runway at the airport to significantly increase its capacity, and allow it to handle an extra ten million passengers annually.

However, the matter will now come under review by the High Court after the SSE claimed that they had "no other choice" but to seek legal proceedings against the plans, accusing the government of overlooking environmental factors - such as climate change and noise pollution - in favour of economics.

Stansted's owners, BAA, have already delayed the expansion by 2 years, pushing it back to 2017.
