It emerged this week that Jersey has been chosen as the international headquarters for the Standard Bank Group's asset management and private client business.
This follows the appointment of Ian Gibson as chief executive of Standard Bank Offshore. According to a statement, Mr Gibson has relocated to the Island from the Bank's London office, and brings with him responsibility for the aforementioned section of the Group's business. In addition, he has direct responsibility for Standard Bank Offshore's operations in Jersey, the Isle of Man, and Mauritius.
Mr Gibson, a South Africa-qualified chartered accountant joined the bank as financial controller in 1992, when it launched its international operations in London.
Speaking this week, the new Standard Bank Offshore boss explained that:
"It was decided earlier this year that the international asset management business should have its headquarters in Jersey alongside the offshore operations. Jersey is fundamental to the Group's offshore business and this move is a further indication of the value of the jurisdiction to the Group."
