Speaking during a visit to Taiwan to open an embassy there, amongst other duties, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr Denzil L. Douglas praised the long-standing cooperative relationship between the two territories.
Speaking with regard to Taiwan's status vis-a-vis the Chinese Mainland, which regards it as a 'runaway' province, and looks with suspicion on those countries which recognise Taiwan diplomatically, Dr Douglas announced that:
“The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to look forward to the time when you will be given recognition and you will be able to take your rightful place among the Nations of the World.”
He went on to thank President Chen Shui-bian and his Government for assisting St Kitts and Nevis in establishing the new information technology centre in Basseterre following a specific request that he made during an Official Visit in 2006.
Dr Douglas added that his Government will continue to seek the support of Taiwan “as we pursue a strategy of adaptation of new economic activities so as to improve the standard of living of all of our people”.
“In this regard, my delegation would wish to engage you on certain specific issues relevant to our own Adaptation Strategy during the course of my visit and my I of course thank your distinguished Minister of Foreign Affairs, who only this morning, signed an agreement that will further the cooperation between our two countries in the development of agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis,” continued Prime Minister Douglas.
Speaking, meanwhile, about the launch of the new St Kitts and Nevis embassy in Taiwan, Dr Douglas predicted, according to Caribbean Net News that there would be “many more years of bilateral cooperation and mutual advancement.”
He went on to add:
“The embassy will serve every role to enhance not only the government to government relationship, not only the country to country relationship, but the people to people relationship, which is critical in advancing those relations.”
