St Kitts And Nevis Registers 1,000th Vessel

10 August 2010

The Saint Kitts and Nevis International Ship Registry will be bolstered by the official launching of a new Yacht Registration Department, the inauguration of which coincided with celebrations for the achievement of a significant milestone for the Registry; the registration of its 1,000th vessel.

The achievement was celebrated on a riverboat cruise hosted by the territory’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, James Williams, and the International Registrar of Shipping & Seamen, Nigel Smith. The launch of the Department, masterminded by Smith, with the backing of the territory’s Prime Minister, Denzil Douglas, is expected to attract further outside interest for the registry from the leisure, commercial and superyacht market, and will complement maritime infrastructure developments which are ongoing in the Federation.

The Department will be led by yacht captain, Scott Dillon, who has announced a number of new ideas that are expected to be implemented by the Registry. These include part-commercial registration, which will allow owners of pleasure yachts to charter the yacht out commercially for up to 84 days per annum, and the registration of tenders to the ‘mother-yacht’ so allowing ‘toys & tenders’ eg. jet skis, submersibles, and ski-boats to be formally identified as being a part of the equipment of the yacht, which Dillon said is becoming increasingly required in this security-conscious age.
