The separation issue in the Caribbean jurisdiction of St Kitts and Nevis has come to the fore once again this week as the nation's legislature debates a motion against the smaller island of Nevis seceding from its larger neighbour St Kitts.
The motion was first introduced into the parliament in September, and according to Caribbean Net News is expected to be passed and "come into force immediately".
Whilst the motion is said to recognise the right of the people of Nevis to exercise their constitutional rights under Section 16 of the Constitution, it recommends that the best solution to the political crisis is the creation of a new constitutional relationship between the islands within a federal system of government.
The motion also contains a reminder that the people of Nevis rejected the idea of separation from St Kitts in a 1998 referendum, and that the National Assembly in the same year passed a resolution expressing its opposition to any such proposal.
