In an open letter to the Gibraltarian people published in the Gibraltar Chronicle this week, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique described the Rock's colonial status as 'unsustainable' and 'anachronistic'.
In what was purportedly an attempt to calm the fears of the Gibraltarian population over what Spanish sovereignty would actually mean for the territory, Mr Pique said that the Spanish government was committed to maintaining the colony's way of life, and (presumably referring to the £32 million in EU aid which will be granted if the population agree to relinquish British citizenship in a referendum) said that an agreement on the issue would pave the way to prosperity.
He added that the Spanish claim is: 'perfectly compatible with the interests of the Gibraltarians as free citizens in a democratic system', and again asked Chief Minister Peter Caruana to attend the Anglo-Spanish talks, cautioning Gibraltar's population against 'intransigent attitudes'.
However, the Gibraltarian people made their feelings on the subject crystal clear last week, when over 80% of the Rock's population turned out to protest against the 'done deal' being discussed by the United Kingdom and Spain.
