Following Spain's assumption of the agenda-setting EU Presidency, Spanish Finance Minister, Rodrigo Rato, outlined the country's agenda for the European Union.
Spain has made several calls for the development of cross-border energy networks, but feels that this should go hand-in-hand with energy tax harmonisation, a proposal which may cause some controversy when debated, as the European Commission feels strongly that the two issues are unrelated.
In addition to tabling discussions regarding the opening-up of the energy, transport, and telecommunications markets throughout the EU, Mr Rato said that with regard to taxation on interest payments from non-resident savings accounts, a priority would be to ensure that the same rules which apply to European member states also apply to their dependent territories. Could he possibly be thinking of Gibraltar?
During his country's presidency, according to the Spanish Finance Minister, the EU will continue to wage war on money laundering and terrorist financing. Efforts to develop trade and investment around the Mediterranean basin will also be a priority.
