Leading UK mergers and acquisitions (M&A) law firm, Slaughter and May announced this week that it will not be going ahead with plans to open an office in China.
According to the Legal Week news service, the possibility of launching an operation on the Chinese mainland was first raised in 2001, when a working committee was established to examine the options.
However, Slaughters finance partner David Frank explained to Legal Week that:
"We decided we could do the [China-related] work we are doing through our Hong Kong office, but we will continue to keep it under review."
Earlier this year, the law firm announced that it would be closing its Singapore office at the end of 2004, citing the success of its referral or 'best friend' network as the reason for the move.
