Inland Revenue chairman, Sir Nicholas Montagu is to step down from his position as head of the UK's tax authority next month, it emerged at the weekend.
Speaking to the Observer on Sunday, a Revenue spokesman revealed that Sir Nicholas will quit when he reaches 60 on March 12, with his successor to be announced shortly afterwards.
The beleaguered Inland Revenue chief's reign is likely to be remembered by the public for the computer failures which beset the online self-assessment system in its early days, and the controversial sale of the tax authority's estate to a Bermuda-based company.
However, according to the Observer, at its last meeting the Revenue board praised Sir Nicholas for the "firm and clear leadership" that he had provided, and suggested that he had "transformed the role of chairman".
