Single Market For Online Copyright Protection Proposed

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

The European Commission last week unveiled plans for the creation of a Europe-wide copyright license for online music use.

The plan to put in place a single collecting society to license and monitor the different uses made of copyrighted music across the European Union is intended to simplify the situation of writers, composers, lyricists, performers, record producers and other rights holders.

Under the current regime, such groups are obliged to seek copyright protection for the online transmission of their songs in each of the 25 EU member states individually.

Speaking on Thursday, Internal Market Commissioner, Charlie McCreevy explained that:

"The absence of pan-European copyright licenses makes it difficult for new European-based online services to take off. That is why we are proposing the creation of Europe-wide copyrights clearance."
