The Singapore government will reportedly freeze all fees for a period of one year following the introduction of a hike in the rate of sales tax.
According to a report in the Straits Times, Second Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has said that fees for businesses such as company registrations, applications for work permits, and employee visas will not be increased after sales tax is raised to 7% from 5%.
The freeze will also apply to other government fees such as television and radio licences, and parking charges.
Singapore is increasing sales tax in order to raise more revenues to spend on social programmes. Details of the sales tax hike and a package of offsetting measures designed to shield low-income groups and the elderly are due to be announced in the Singapore government's next budget in February 2007.
