The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) has this week launched a new tax gallery, “IRAS Gallery – The Singapore Tax Story”, and a commemorative book, “The IRAS Story” to celebrate 60 years of tax administration in Singapore.

The launch will be officiated by Minister for Finance, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Commenting on IRAS’s celebration of 60 years of tax administration, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam said:

“We have one of the lowest costs of tax collection and highest rates of voluntary compliance in the world. This has come about through IRAS’s efforts to simplify its operations and streamline tax filing and compliance procedures for the taxpayer. IRAS has been cited by the World Bank as a model of tax administration, particularly for its innovative use of technology. On this 60th year of tax administration, I would like to offer my heartiest congratulations to IRAS and its people on their pursuit of excellence.”

The “IRAS Gallery – The Singapore Tax Story” takes visitors back to 1819, the beginning of modern Singapore, and aims to inform visitors on how the tax system has evolved and its role in transforming the economic and social development of Singapore over the years, and charts the Singapore tax story from the beginning of modern Singapore to the present.

“The IRAS Story - 60 years of tax administration in Singapore” is a commemorative book that chronicles how tax administration has evolved since 1948 in tandem with the changing economic and social landscapes.

It highlights IRAS’s role in assessing and collecting taxes, and its service initiatives and IT developments, and also serves as a testimony to the commitment and dedication shown by staff over the years, and how they have contributed to IRAS’s transformation.
