According to reports in the Russian media last week, the government is set to collect around US$154 million in tax from small businesses this year, almost half the amount collected in 2002.
However, Anatoly Melnichenko, head of the Small Business Taxation Department explained recently that this is due to the simplification of the tax system for small businesses which is coming into effect this year, and is designed to dranatically reduce the tax burden for small businesses and business people.
Reporting on the forthcoming change, the Pravda news service revealed that:
'By the beginning of December 2002 about 200 thousand organisations and more than 300 thousand private business people had applied to switch to the simplified tax system in 2003.'
