Sibneft Becomes Russian Taxman’s Latest Target

by Tatiana Smolenskaya, Tax-News.com, Moscow

Sibneft, Russia’s fifth largest oil company, is the latest firm to come under scrutiny from the Russian tax authorities, after sources revealed to the Interfax news agency that it has received a $733 million bill for back taxes.

According to the report, which cited a source from within the Duma Security Committee, the demand was made in connection with unpaid taxes in the year 2000.

It is unclear whether the latest claim for back tax is connected with a government request earlier this year which called on Sibneft pay back some $1.42 billion – a claim that was not actively pursued by the authorities.

Despite assurances to the contrary by President Putin this week, the government's latest move is likely to confirm fears held by big businesses in Russia that the authorities are about to unleash a wave of tax investigations in the wake of the high profile probe into the tax affairs of Yukos
