According to a recent survey conducted by International Financial Law Review, oil firms Shell and BP employ nearly a third of the lawyers employed in all FTSE 100 companies.
The poll of the UK's largest listed companies revealed that Shell leads the field in terms of number of corporate counsel employed, with 623 in-house lawyers on its payroll, whilst BP has an in-house legal team totalling 385.
Pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline, financial services group, Barclays, and telecoms firm, Vodafone follow closely behind, with the former employing 238 lawyers and the latter two employing 170 each.
The IFLR survey also found that in addition to banks, companies with greater exposure to the United States often employ more corporate counsel.
Companies operating in heavily regulated or closely scrutinised sectors also tend to keep more of their legal work in-house, IFLR revealed.
