Seychelles President Visits UAE For Bilateral Cooperation Talks

by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

12 March 2002

Seychelles President, France Albert Rene paid a state visit to the United Arab Emirates at the weekend, in order to participate in talks about extending bilateral cooperation between the two regions.

President Rene met with the President of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, to discuss the need to bolster political, trade, and investment ties between the two jurisdictions, and described the meetings as a 'potent symbol of the warm relations which exist' between the Seychelles and the United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Khalifa, keen to develop the region's standing as a centre for international business, reportedly stressed the need to encourage globally mobile business people and expatriate workers to take advantage of the opportunities available in both jurisdictions. He also expressed hopes that President Rene's visit would pave the way for more joint ventures and investment between the Seychelles and the UAE.

However, it is not known as yet whether any taxation initiatives or tax sparing agreements were discussed at the weekend meeting.
