Senator John Kyl's (R - Ariz) latest attempt to ban internet gambling in the United States has been blocked in the Senate after his legislation came up against a procedural hurdle put in place by a Democrat lawmaker.
Kyl, a long-time opponent of internet gambling, had attempted to get his legislation through by attaching it to the wording of an appropriations bill passing through the Senate. However, Kyl was thwarted after an un-named Democrat invoked a point of order on the amendment, arguing that it should be placed on a bill in the Banking and Finance committee and not an appropriations bill. The point of order was then passed in a majority vote.
Kyl's legislation would require banks and credit card companies to block payments to online Internet gambling sites.
After the latest setback, Kyl remains undaunted and vowed to proceed with the measure, which he insists will become law "at some point in time."
"There should be no reason why we can't move forward on this," Kyl stated.
