Fearing defeat, Senate Republicans announced last week that the vote on President Bush’s tax cutting 2005 budget plan is being postponed until at least next month.
The Senate was due to vote on the measure last Thursday following House approval of a plan that extended certain tax breaks by just one year.
However, Senate majority leader Bill Frist (R – Tenn) was unable to garner enough support, as four GOP moderates stuck to their guns and refused to support the budget without the imposition of ‘pay go’ rules to pay for tax cuts.
Senate Republicans need only two more votes to pass the legislation, and Frist has expressed optimism that the impasse will be broken by the time the chamber returns from its week-long Memorial Day recess in early June. Nevertheless, lawmakers on both sides have indicated that the dispute may continue to drag on for some time yet.
