Seminar To Analyze BVI's Legislative Plans

Tax-News.com, London

22 April 2003

Washington-based Center for Freedom and Prosperity is planning a seminar in the British Virgin Islands to analyze the local government's plans to introduce new legislation which will tighten the supervisory regime for financial services, partly in response to pressure from the British Government, the OECD and the UN.

The CFP says that the seminar will include an update on international initiatives and provide analysis that will help the citizens of BVI in making the best decisions for their country. Speakers will address the following topics, among others:

  • Does the new legislation represent an erosion of common-law protections of individual privacy?
  • Are jurisdictions such as the BVI being subjected to regulatory burdens that violate "level playing field" conditions?
  • Will the new laws undermine economic opportunity and make it harder for citizens to obtain good jobs?
  • What is the potential impact on the government budget revenue if the financial services industry is adversely impacted?

The seminar will take place on Monday, May 5th, 2003 at the Prospect Reef Resort & Spa, Tortola Suite, Reef House, Road Town, Tortola, BVI (http://www.prospectreef.com/).

Speakers will include Daniel J. Mitchell, Ph.D.,Senior Fellow in Political Economy, The Heritage Foundation, on Tax Competition, Financial Privacy, and Fiscal Sovereignty, Andrew F. Quinlan, President, Center for Freedom and Prosperity on Protecting the Level Playing Field: Stopping OECD Imperialism, Dr. Gilbert NMO Morris, Executive Director, The Landfall Centre, on The Bahamas: Case History of Economic Suicide, and Joel Mowbray, Reporter for the National Review and a Nationally-Syndicated Columnist, on The United States and the Battle against Tax Harmonization.

A comprehensive report describing the regulatory regime in most key offshore jurisdictions, with an emphasis on the survival of banking secrecy, is available in the Tax News Reports Shop at http://www.tax-news.com/reportshop/
