It emerged this week that the second stage of the Spanish authorities' drive to liberalise the country's domain name regime has commenced.
Previously, the registration of a domain name with a .es suffix was an extremely complicated process for those without a Spanish contact.
However, a three stage liberalisation process has begun, the first stage of which - to allow official bodies and organisations to register their domain names - took place in June and July.
The second phase, which began on Tuesday and will end in mid-October, will allow Spanish firms to apply for domain names identical to their company name, and will permit foreign companies which hold trademark and other IP rights in Spain to lodge their domain name applications.
The final stage of the process, which will commence on November 2, will allow any Spanish or foreign entity to apply for a domain name ending in .es.
