The Banque Centrale des Comores recently decided to allow a second banking institution - the Banque de la Reunion - to establish two branches in the Comoros region, one in Moroni and one in Anjouan.
According to a report from the Africa Intelligence news service, the existing licence holder, Banque pour l'Industrie at le Commerce (an affiliate organisation to BNP Paribas, which has recently divested itself of other affiliates in Mozambique and Mauritius) has acted to protect itself against the poaching of its staff by any new rival.
In an amendment to the company's labor contract, BIC employees have been asked to promise that, in the two years following the termination of their contract with the bank, they: 'would not join a company on the territory of the Comoro Union which has similar activities in the banking and financial sector, nor fill a post of direction in the terms of a social mandate.'
