It emerged this week that California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed into law a bill which seeks to regulate the covert installation of monitoring programs, or spyware, onto the computers of internet users.
According to Senator Kevin Murray (D-Los Angeles), who introduced the legislation in February of this year, the bill will ban the unauthorized installation of spyware by requiring software makers and website operators to notify internet users when they install the software onto their computers.
It also opens the way for consumers to sue spyware developers for damages if they break the law.
However, critics of the new state legislation have condemned it as toothless, arguing that firms which provide confusing licensing agreements resulting in the inadvertent downloading of spyware programs should also have been included in the remit of the bill.
