SVP Seeks Withdrawal Of Switzerland's EU Application

Stung by the results of the recent referendum, in which the Swiss population voted to allow workers from the ten new EU member states to enter the country, the Swiss People's Party (SVP) has called for a long-forgotten application for EU membership talks to be withdrawn.

The issue first came under discussion in 1963, and in 1992, the Swiss government issued another request for the commencement of accession talks. However, the point was rendered moot by the referendum held seven months later, in which voters rejected plans to join the European Economic Area.

According to reports in the national media, the request by the SVP, which is the largest and most powerful of the government parties, is being viewed as an attempt to regain the political initiative.
