It emerged last week that Rep. Mary Bono (R-California) has resubmitted the SPY Act (Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass) to the new Congressional session, after it stalled last October in the Senate.
The legislation, which passed in the House of Representatives by 399-1, prohibits common spyware practices such as keystroke logging, the hijacking of homepages, and phishing, and puts in place an opt-in regime for software which legally collects personal information from internet users.
In a statement, Rep. Bono announced that:
"We have received a tremendous amount of support for the SPY Act and are confident that this year we will see a spyware bill in the law books."
