The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) will today seek to profit from the increasing popularity of mobile telephone ringtones based on music composed by its members.
Speaking before the federal Copyright Board, SOCAN representatives are expected to propose a 10% tariff on the revenue received from ringtones, with a minimum fee of 20 cents per downloading.
Recently released figures have suggested that the Canadian ringtone market is worth around $1.5 million per year.
