Speaking following the conclusion of the Securities and Exchange Commission hedge fund forum last week, two SEC officials have suggested that far from needing protection from the more complex and risky investment strategies employed by hedge fund managers, ordinary investors could benefit from the adoption of some of those techniques by mutual funds.
'One of the things we learned [on Thursday] was that in some ways, [hedge funds] aren't necessaruly more risky,' the Wall Street Journal quoted Cynthia Glassman as observing on Friday, a viewpoint supported by fellow commissioner, Roel Campos.
However, Ms Glassman went on to add that: 'Obviously, they are more complex and investments are less liquid, so we need to be very careful as we consider our options.' She announced that the issue will certainly be discussed in the report being compiled by the SEC in response to the two days of hearings.
