Certain South African taxpayers will be able to file their tax returns electronically following an announcement by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel in a speech to the National Assembly.
The service is being supplied by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and will be free to certain categories of taxpayer, companies and trusts included. It is initially being set up to cover income tax, PAYE and VAT payments, and is being introduced next month.
"Building on the model introduced two years ago, this facility will now be controlled by the SARS, and will be offered free of charge to the taxpayer as part of our drive to improve the service we give to taxpayers and to keep in line with international trends," said the finance minister in his speech. He added: "The expansion of other electronic forms of facilitation is currently being explored."
The new service is designed to iron out inefficiencies in the system on the part of both SARS and the taxpayer.
