The South African Revenue Service (SARS) officially launches its online tax return facility later this week which has already attracted 75,000 users since the system went live in July this year.
The system is a result of a strategy put in place by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel three years ago to develop an electronic alternative to the traditional paper method and is being offered to the taxpayer at no cost in tune with similar systems around the world. Five intermediaries have been selected to facilitate payments on behalf of SARS.
Initially, the service is aimed at companies and VAT vendors as these are the groups most likely to have access to the internet. However, the SARS is intending to expand the service later in the year to allow a wider range of returns to be placed including trusts. The revenue service is also hoping that many personal income tax payers will eventually make use of the system, despite the relatively low level of home computer ownership in the country.
