Budget airline, Ryanair has announced that it is considering taking legal action against other airlines and against the European Commission if it is forced to repay millions of euros in state aid afforded to it by the Belgian authorities.
The EC is expected to announce today that the financial assistance received by the airline for flying to the Charleroi regional airport constitutes illegal state aid.
In a statement last week, Ryanair announced that:
"If there is an unacceptable decision, Ryanair will not only appeal it but has instructed its advisors to initiate state aid cases and complaints against every other airline flying into every state airport which offers concessions and discounts."
It went on to observe that:
"Repayment here could force all of Europe's airlines and airports to retrospectively make repayments as similar arrangements to Charleroi are commonplace in almost every (EU) member state."
