The World Trade Organization is meeting this week to discuss Russia's long-delayed accession to the global trade body, it has been announced.
According to EU and other officials, Russia's prospects have been much improved by the announcement made recently by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that increases in controversial lumber export duties would be postponed for nine months to a year.
These duties are opposed by the paper industry within the EU, and were one of the sticking points in the negotiations, with subsidies for Russian farmers representing another key point of disagreement.
EU Trade Commissioner, Catherine Ashton stated earlier this month that: "We are more than 90% of the way there. I firmly believe that the remaining issues can be resolved."
Despite being WTO members, Georgia and Ukraine are not expected to block the Russian bid, paving the way for a possible January 1, 2010 accession date.
