Russian telecommunications firm North-West Telecom has received a back tax claim for RUB20 billion ($712,000) relating to the tax years from 2001 to 2003, the company has announced.
According to Ella Tomilina, the firm’s Head of Investor Relations, the claim for back tax has arisen from the method of calculation it used for the cost of consultancy advice during company restructuring.
However, Tomilina added that the sum represents only a small fraction of North-West’s profits, and she stated in a Reuters reports that: "For us this is a very small sum - 0.01% of net profit - and will not tell on our financial results in any way."
Last week, another telecoms firm, Dalsvyaz, was also targeted by Russia’s tax service. This case was especially unusual as it represented the first time that a state-owned telecommunications company has received a claim for back taxes.
Dalsvyaz has stated its intention to appeal the RUB718 million ($25.6 million) claim.
