OAO Vimpel Communications, Russia's second largest mobile phone operator, has succeeded in reducing a claim for back taxes relating to the tax year 2003/4.

The company announced on Friday that the Moscow Arbitration Court reduced a claim by the Russian Federal Tax Service to cut the amount VimpelCom owed to 490 million rubles (US$18.5 million) from 1.7 billion rubles.

The ruling represents a partial victory for the company, which had initially faced a claim from the tax service of 1.9 billion rubles, which included 405 million rubles in fines and penalties.

However, Vimelcom may still appeal against the remainder of the tax claim.
