Russia May Drop Steel Export Tax

by Tatiana Smolensky, Tax-News.com, Moscow

05 April 2002

Amid the confusion created by American tariffs on imported steel, Russia is considering the removal of a 5% export tax in order to offset the effects of the measure on its own steel industry, a senior government official revealed on Wednesday.

However, talking to the Reuters news service, Andrei Kushnirenko, Secretary of the Commission for Protective Measures in Foreign Trade admitted that the matter was far from settled.

'Some ministries support the removal of the tariff, others don't, and we need another meeting to discuss it,' he said.

Mr Kushnirenko revealed that a preliminary discussion on the issue will be held by the Commission's working group today, and that the matter will be raised again mid-month at a meeting to discuss customs tariffs, despite the fact that the Commission had announced in March that it would reach an agreement without an additional gathering being necessary.
