An independent review team has been drafted in by the Isle of Man government to undertake a comprehensive review of the scope and structure of the jurisdiction's government and to recommend changes in the way the Manx authorities govern and deliver services.
The review is being conducted under the auspices of the Governance Committee of the Council of Ministers, which is chaired by Chief Minister Donald Gelling MLC.
The purpose of the exercise is to ensure that the organisational structure and scope of Government supports the provision of public services that are value for money, good quality, and accountable.
A website, at www.gov.im/review, has also been launched to give the public the opportunity to submit their views on the review process.
Chairman of the Review Team Robert Quayle explained: "We have already sought views from Members of Tynwald, Government officers, local authorities, business organisations and unions. The website will help to reach out to the wider public, who are welcome to submit their opinions on the future scope and structure of the Isle of Man Government."
The review has been prompted by a number of organisational issues that have arisen in recent years and comes nearly 20 years after the introduction of the Ministerial system in 1987. The review will look at whether current services still need to be provided by the Government, whether these services are adequately provided to meet the actual customer needs, and whether best practices are being used to provide these services.
Said Mr Quayle: "The job of the Review Team is to carry out a comprehensive review looking independently and objectively at a wide range of options. Our brief is to produce a report for the Council of Ministers by the summer of this year. The final decisions on the way forward will, of course, be a matter for the Council of Ministers and Tynwald in due course."
