The Irish Independent reported this week that industrial action by staff in the Revenue Solicitors' Office may lead to a disruption of the government's tax fraud crackdown.
On Monday, the newspaper revealed that eighteen legal technical workers downed tools this week, refusing to process any external communications via telephone, fax, e-mail, or written correspondence.
Speaking on behalf of the IMPACT union members, Edna Hoare revealed that the dispute is over low staffing levels, and that the department has been appealing for enhanced staffing for over a year.
'The staffing structure needs to be modernised to ensure a top quality service to taxpayers,' she explained to the Independent prior to the commencement of the strike. 'We have done everything possible to negotiate an agreement and we have said that staff are willing to deliver further modernisation and change.'
The Revenue Solicitors' Office strike is likely to disrupt the issuance of summonses for customs duty evasion, corporate non-payment of PAYE and VAT, and non-filing offences.
