Revenue Commissioners To Adopt Computerised System For Identifying Tax Evaders

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

17 October 2002

Ireland's Revenue Commissioners announced on Tuesday that a computerised risk analysis system will shortly replace the current manual processes for weeding out tax evaders.

The system, scheduled to become operational in 2003, cost around 1.4 million euros, according to reports, and was supplied by computer services group, Bull Information Systems.

However, it is thought likely that this sizeable investment in the computerised system will pay dividends in the end, as where it has been implemented in other countries, the amount of tax collected has increased - by as much as 20% in some cases.

Speaking at Dublin Castle following the signing of the contract with Bull on Tuesday, Revenue Chairman Mr. Frank Daly said: 'We are determined to use every means at our disposal to identify tax evasion. Computerised risk analysis and profiling will help us greatly to home in on those people who pose the highest risk. This new electronic analysis system is a demonstration of our on-going commitment to confronting tax evasion in all its forms'.
