As part of the recent discussion on the introduction of a Digital Rights Agency in the UK, Intellectual Property experts have suggested that restricting bandwidth could play a key role in reducing online copyright infringement.
To try to tackle the problems associated with copyright infringement, the UK government has invited views on the role a digital rights agency (DRA) could play in protecting and promoting the legal use of copyright content online, and how industry, consumer groups and government can work together to create an environment where investment in creativity is rewarded.
The aim of the proposed DRA is to educate and inform individuals on the harm of copyright infringement in the hope that they will make better choices about how to obtain digital media.
However, according to experts from the UK-Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO), introducing an agency like this will do little to deter individuals persistently breaking copyright rules with their downloads - and since a proposal to terminate the internet connections of repeat offenders has been rejected, these experts believe that tackling the bandwidth of those offending could be the only feasible option left.
