A record fine has been imposed on Danish telecommunications equipment firm, Aircom Erhvery ApS under the EU Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications, it emerged this week.
Demark is one of just six EU member states to have implemented the Directive, and the 400,000 Krone (£37,000) fine imposed for the sending of more than 15,000 spam e-mails represents one of the first of its kind under the new rules.
Speaking to Reuters, Jane Frederikke Land, acting on behalf of the Danish National Consumer Agency (which brought the case), announced that:
"We are very pleased with the judgement, which we expect will have a preventative effect on the practice of sending unsolicited e-mails to both private consumers and companies."
