A record-breaking 1.9 million people lodged their 2007 return online using e-tax, the Australian Taxation Office announced late last week.
Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo revealed that e-tax lodgments had exceeded initial projections by 100,000:
“e-tax has been a huge success in making it easier for people to lodge their tax returns. I’m pleased so many people are taking advantage of this free, secure and easy to use service,”he announced.
Mr D’Ascenzo went on to explain that the increasing number of features of e-tax have cemented its popularity among people who prepare their own returns:
“This year, e-tax users have been able to access even more pre-filled information including bank interest, share dividends and information from other government agencies such as Medicare and Centrelink,” he revealed.
While people under 50 represent about 85% of all e-tax users, an increasing number of older Australians are recognising the benefits of e-tax.
“In 2007, people over the age of 60 recorded by far the strongest growth in e-tax usage, with those over 75 recording the strongest growth of all, up more than 42% on the previous year,” the Tax Commissioner announced.
For the third year in a row, New South Wales recorded the highest number of e-tax users, with Queensland in second place, followed by Victoria.
