At its organizational meeting for the 110th Congress last week, the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) appointed Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) as Chairman and Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) as Vice Chairman for the opening session of the committee.
“It is an honor to lead the Joint Committee on Taxation,” said Rangel, who also chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over taxation.
“The work we do here will set the tone of debate on tax policy throughout the Congress and I look forward to working with my colleagues to reach bipartisan solutions to the issues facing our nation," he added.
Both appointments were approved by unanimous consent.
The JCT is a bi-partisan, select committee which advises Congress on the systems and methods of internal revenue laws.
The committee and its staff help foster a closer understanding of the detailed problems confronting both taxpayer and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the development and application of tax law. The committee is comprised of senior Democratic and Republican members from the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Finance Committee.
Also on the JCT in the 110th Congress are: Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Rep Sander Levin (D-MI), Rep. Jim McCrery (R-LA), Rep. Wally Herger (R-CA), Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-WV), Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT).
