The beleaguered manufacturer of the BlackBerry mobile e-mailing device, Research In Motion, is now facing a patent dispute in the UK, it emerged this week.
The firm is currently embroiled in a long-running dispute in the United States with NTP over ownership of the e-mail 'push' technology utilised by the devices, and the judge presiding over the case, James Spencer at the weekend ordered the two sides to submit written arguements regarding a possible injunction on the manufacture of BlackBerries to him by January 17.
Now, according to reports in the European media, Luxembourg-based IP company Inpro has claimed that technology contained in BlackBerries violates a UK patent that it has held since 1996.
RIM has countered by arguing that Inpro's patents cover older and less powerful technology than is contained in their devices.
Meanwhile, the US Patent and Trademark Office recently announced that it will attempt to complete a review of the patents involved in the NTP-RIM dispute which was initiated in 2002.
