RIM And Forgent Reach JPEG Patent Deal

According to reports, the company behind the BlackBerry wireless e-mail device, Research In Motion has reached a licensing agreement with the owner of a patent pertaining to the JPEG standard of digital image processing.

Forgent Networks has so far collected more than $100 million in royalties relating to the so-called '672 patent' and is currently involved in a patent infringement dispute with around 40 PC companies.

The license granted to RIM under the agreement is known to cover all BlackBerry devices and the BlackBerry Connect messaging service. However, financial details of the deal have not yet emerged.
