by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

30 April 2004

It emerged on Wednesday that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed 477 more 'John Doe' lawsuits against those accused of illegally sharing copyright protected music files, including dozens of university and college students.

Although the industry group praised the efforts of US educational establishments to clamp down on file sharing activity on their computer networks, it suggested that the message is still not getting through to the worst offenders, who deserve to be sued.

Including the most recent batch, the RIAA has now filed 2,454 lawsuits against alleged file sharers, although none of the cases have yet gone to trial.

According to reports, the newest lawsuits targeted students at Mansfield; Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island; Emory University in Atlanta; Georgia Institute of Technology; Gonzaga University of Spokane, Wash.; Michigan State University; Princeton University in New Jersey; Sacred Heart University of Fairfield, Conn.; Texas A&M University; Trinity College of Hartford, Conn.; Trinity University of San Antonio; the University of Kansas; University of Minnesota and Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
