It emerged last week that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has dropped the "Clean Slate" program that it launched in September.
Under the terms of the scheme, file sharers were required to acknowledge their activities in writing and remove illegally downloaded files from their computer, in return for which the RIAA pledged not to target them in its copyright infringement lawsuit campaign.
However, following a legal challenge issued by California resident, Eric Parke, who alleged that the Association was employing fraudulent business practices by promoting the program, the RIAA revealed on Friday that it has already been dropped.
"The RIAA has concluded that the program is no longer necessary or appropriate, and has voluntarily withdrawn it," court papers submitted by the organisation's legal team announced last week.
However, the RIAA has pledged to honour the terms of the program for the 1,108 people who signed up to it.
