RAC Legal Services Pushes For B+ Regulatory Model For Lawyers

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

14 October 2004

In a response to Sir David Clementi's review of the regulation and representation of lawyers in the United Kingdom, RAC Legal Services, which deals with claims made by RAC policyholders, has come out in favour of the B+ regulatory model for the sector.

Under the terms of the third model proposed by the Prudential chief, the Law Society would separate its representative and regulatory functions, in addition to being overseen by a legal services board.

According to the RAC response, the current industry bodies do not provide adequate representation for their members, and do not have sufficient recognition amongst the general public.

An additional proposal put forward as part of the review would permit the creation of legal practices jointly owned and managed by lawyers and non-lawyers; a suggestion which has been welcomed by the RAC's claims arm, which has indicated that it would act as a legal practice if allowed to do so.
