The biggest marina conference in the Southern Hemisphere opened on the Gold Coast on Monday, showcasing one of the fastest growing sectors of the marine industry in Australia and New Zealand.

Opening the Marinas 2007 Conference on behalf of Minister for State Development John Mickel, Parliamentary Secretary Gary Fenlon revealed that this year's conference had attracted the largest number of delegates in the event's history.

More than 250 industry players from throughout Australia and across the Tasman were expected to attend the three day event.

"The marine industry is becoming a major employer in Queensland and the marinas sector, which provides solutions for the storage of vessels, is increasing in importance," Mr Fenlon told delegates, continuing:

"Queensland's marine industry generates annual revenue in excess of $2.6 billion and employs some 11,000 people up and down our vast coastline."

"As well as infrastructure such as the world-renowned Gold Coast Marine Precinct, Queensland is also home to some of the country's most progressive jetty manufacturers like Superior Jetties, Bellingham Marine, The Jetty Specialist and Pacific Pontoon and Pier."

"All are gaining an international reputation for the quality of their workmanship and design. In fact many of the markets from South East Asia to the Middle East are now using the Australian Standard (AS3962) as a benchmark for their designs."
