Russian President Vladimir Putin has named Mikhail Fradkov, former head of the tax police and a relative political lightweight, as his somewhat surprising choice to become the next Prime Minister.
Fradkov comes to the job having served under President Boris Yeltsin as minister for external relations and minister for trade, and will vacate his current post as Russia’s representative to the EU. He is replacing former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov following Putin’s government reshuffle ahead of the upcoming elections.
Commenting on his candidate, Putin was quoted in the regional media as saying: "It had to be a highly professional person, organised, having strong work experience in varied branches of state activity. I am very glad our opinion coincided."
President Putin on Monday listed Fradkov’s particular strengths as his expertise on economic issues and in fighting corruption.
Fradkov’s nomination remains to be approved by the parliamentary lower house, the Duma. However, with the pro-Kremlin United Russia party holding more than 300 of the Duma’s 450 seats, this is expected to be a mere formality.
