Recent efforts made by the authorities against tax evasion have already taken tax collections in Italy for the first 11 months of this year beyond the overall budgeted tax revenues for the whole year.
In fact, in the first 11 months to end-November 2009, total tax receipts in Italy reached EUR7.4bn (USD10.9bn), above the total expected tax revenue in the 2009 budget by some EUR0.2bn. The government is now looking at the whole year’s figure being over EUR8bn higher.
The above statistics were disclosed by the head of the Italian Revenue Agency, Attilio Befera, who said that they could be considered extremely satisfying to the Agency, in a period of economic recession and when the Agency itself has been in a state of reorganization.
He emphasized that the tax revenues are a record for Italy and that collections in December will therefore represent an exceptional return for the government.
