Protestors opposed to the introduction of US style software patent laws to the European Union will be attending a demonstration outside the European Parliament this Wednesday, according to reports in the technology media.
The march, which is intended to persuade MEPs to vote on the following Monday against the plans to introduce patents on software, will reportedly be followed by a small conference to be held within Parliament.
Additionally, according to The Register news service, FFII, one of the organisers of the conference, is planning an online demonstration whereby participants refuse access to their sites, and instead display a page protesting over this issue of software patents. The Register explained that:
'The theory behind it is that with patents introduced, website owners will not be able to know whether they are inadvertently infringing an old patent or not.'
The increased political sophistication of the campaign against the EU proposals has been welcomed by many observers, who had noted earlier that the protesters risked alienating MEPs, rather than persuading them to vote against EU software patents.
